Scope: Impacts direct patient care for surgical patients within MD Anderson Cancer Center.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Determines an appropriate pre-anesthesia examination has been made by a physician, relevant tests have been completed and a thorough assessment of the patient has been performed. Develops a plan of care based on assessment, interpretation, anticipated procedure and essential equipment. Coordinates with appropriate health care providers. Adm! inisters anesthetic agents and adjunctive therapeutics. Monito! rs physiological responses and takes corrective action to maintain or stabilize the patient's condition. Provides resuscitative care. Records pertinent information on the patient's records. Terminates anesthesia. Provides patients with post-anesthesia care.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age specific care for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. This is a direct patient care function.
Demonstrates aptitude and willingness to originate necessary action required by the job responsibilities. This includes review of the patient’s history and physical examination to assure the most appropriate course of action is being taken. Assures that all preoperative assessments have been completed.
Develops a plan of care based on preoperative assessments and coordinates with all appropriate healthcare givers.
Initiate the planned anesthetic technique under the direction of the ! anesthesiologist. Administers anesthetic agents and adjunctive therapeutics at levels to maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis. Monitors patients intraoperatively for physiological responses and manage emergence and recovery from the anesthetic. Performs intubation on patients when necessary. Inserts intravenous lines and arterial lines for the patient medications and monitoring. Removes lines when procedure is completed or at the direction of the anesthesiologist.
Yearly in-service required on safety precautions.
Documents all pertinent information on the intraoperative course of patients on the anesthetic record with minimum amount of errors (< 2 per month). Completes all quality improvement forms and submits them within 24 hours of surgical procedure. Honestly completes weekly time sheets for submission to payroll.
MARGINAL OR PERIODIC FUNCTIONS:
Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION:
Received: Direct supervision by the Anesthesiologist and general supervision by! Manager or designee.
Given: Supervise Nurse Anesthetist students as assigned.
Job Description - Requirements
EDUCATION:
Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners (TSBNE) for clinical licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Preferred: Master's degree in Nursing or related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: None.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Required: All of the following: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist by the Council on Certification (or Recertification) of Nurse Anesthetist. Advanced Practice Recognition as Nurse Anesthetist by the Texas Board of Nursing.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
